Best Detroit Techno Documentaries

process part series: new podcast by with Ryba /325 and Radere /326

Modyfier is an Artist’s platform: it’s an idea acting as energy, it’s an experiment in accrual (as a collection), it’s an attitude that rides creativity and freedom. The Process Series relies on referral as people who participate each suggest someone else, creating its form, shifting in directions I would not be able to steer alone.

Scan 7 - The Resistance EP [TRESOR 255]

Synonymous with Detroit, Techno, and Tresor, Scan 7 have remained protagonists of the Berlin-Detroit axis since it was first forged in the sweaty obsidian of the club’s original Wertheim vault home. Now, over 20 years later, the masked techno collective pay tribute to the triptych’s matted histories on ‘The Resistance EP’.
With identifiable nods to Scan 7’s Underground Resistance affiliations – the label that launched the group, and whose militaristic and political philosophies can be found littered throughout their discography – the EP begins with quintessential Detroit strings and groove before delving into darker techno territory. On the A-side, “The Resistance” offers an uplifting and delightfully nostalgic jaunt through dance music past, using all those favourite and immortal house tropes to deliver instant gratification. Meanwhile, the B-side shows off Scan 7 as masters of warm, yet shadowy techno – plus their trademark drum work – in the hypnotic “Why Not?” and driving, basement-ready “In & Out Of The Groove”.
Alongside many outings on Tresor’s renowned compilation series, Scan 7 produced two albums for the label – ‘Dark Territory’ in 1996, followed up by ‘Resurfaced’ in 1999 – before leader TrackMasta Lou’s Cratesavers Muzik took over as the group’s primary recording outlet. ‘The Resistance EP’ is a welcomed return to Tresor from one of its stalwart artists, and paves the way for a retrospective compilation on 20 years of Scan 7, due out at the close of the year.

Vito Arpino - Accidentally Asked Questions on Wunderkammer Recordings + liveset at Dystopia, London

Vito Arpino - Accidentally Asked Questions on Wunderkammer Recordings

Accidentally Asked Questions' is the first solo/concept album of Vito Arpino. The questions which the title evokes, and the common thread of the music tracks, are related to troubles of modern life. In the current sweltering reality, economic distress and working problems limit the emotion field and cause depersonalization and a desire to isolate ourselves. Each track is a conflicting answer to these forced and hostile questions. The compositions carry within the long and eclectic experience of the author: simple and well laid out melodies mingle with broken rhythms on 3/4 or more solid 4/4 beats. A.A.Q. is influenced by different styles, among them the '80 techno soul of Detroit and the italian melodic style referable to Morricone's music. The album includes collaborations with Gaetano Partipilo (saxophonist/flutist), talented exponent of the Italina Jazz scene, and the young actress/songwriter Anna Mila Stella. Like every Wunderkammer's release, artwork and visual communication are designed and produced by Eugenio Vendemmiale. This concept album is released by Wunderkammer Recordings, who've chosen to produce and promote artists from Puglia (Italy) alongside international artists, to give them the visibility and recognition they deserve.

Rolando liveset at Content Manchester [02.10.2009]

Roland Rocha was born in 1970’s southwest Detroit. He grew up in the mainly Hispanic district of the city, which to this day is dominated by Mexican migrants looking for work in the heavily industrial city.
From an early age he was influenced by his musical culture with it’s roots in Latin American rhythms and percussion. He was greatly encouraged by his enthusiastic father, also a well known local musician and as a young teenager he pursued his own interest in music and became a well known and respected dj within his own right.
It was in the mid eighties that he was so inspired when he heard Jeff Mills spin (at the time he was known as “the wizard”) that he quickly unearthed the new radical and ground breaking sounds of techno. then by chance, through a mutual friend Ruben Gonzalez, he was introduced to the formidable “mad”mike banks and was promptly (to his delight) asked to become a member of the infamous and enigmatic underground resistance crew.
Soon afterwards came his first ever opportunity to cross the Atlantic and wow audiences worldwide with his mild manner and now infamous speedy turntable proficiency; skilfully meandering from funky house, gut vibrating electro, the great techno classics and new soulful melodic techno - earning him respect and notoriety within the industry as a whole.

Prologue Special - Claudio PRC & Svart1 - 111 (live and unreleased)

Claudio PRC aka Claudio Porceddu

Experimentation and sound research have always been key points of growth in art and music for Claudio PRC. Raised in a small Sardinian town (Italy), he has always been in close contact with all kinds of music, but the influences received by the strong Techno wave coming from Detroit and the special attractions for Concrete and Electroacoustic music definitively marked the development of his current musical ideology. The experiences that derive from his personal observations in the field of electroacoustic music are combined with the continuing study of lean and simple rhythmic structures. His feelings and adventures turn into deep and hypnotic atmospheres that are intertwined with abstract and sharp rhythms. Claudio currently releases music on German label Prologue and also appeared on labels such as Aconito Records and Stroboscopic Artefacts. His DJ sets are characterised by the same concept that distinguishes his music, and range from complex Ambient to sophisticated Techno.

Svart1 aka Raimondo Gaviano

Svart1 is Raimondo Gaviano, who works in the fields of Ambient, Dark Ambient, Industrial, live-performance and video. He is a collector of sounds and noises, which are the basis of his music.
He generates it from field-recordings, syntheziser, guitar, dulcimer, pc or other interesting stuffs. He currently lives and works in Cagliari, Sardinia.
Based in Cagliari, but with frequent international Svart1 is one of the few dark-ambient musicians that starting from Sardinia was able to have a gig in May 2009 in one of the most popular European club of industrial music, the "Gyari" Club of Budapest for "HYPERBOREA" Festival with SCIVIAS. Returned to his native Cagliari was guest of the two major festivals of electronic music and culture of Sardinia in 2009 "MUSICINTOUCH" and 2010 "SIGNAL FESTIVAL". In 2011 was in Zagreb, Croatia at "Tvornica Culture" for his gig "DER SCHNITTER" first tape release party and in March 2012 in Prague, Czech republique at "Cafe V Lese" with FUCK TV and SWF.

Joey Beltram @ Kinetic, Sept. 2012 mix

Joey Beltram is a techno pioneer, heralded as one of the scene's biggest stars.

In 2009 alone Beltram had a Beatport top 10 with his remix of Oliver Huntemann's Shanghai Spinner. Then there was his huge vinyl releases like the Scorpion on Drumcode, Shaking Trees on Harthouse (a Raveline track of the month), and a killer remix of Abe Duque's Let's Take It Back that had rave reactions across the board including MANDY, Dave Clarke and Hell. There was also his run of headline slots at festivals, which in 08/09 has included Coachella, both of Italy's Play the Music Festivals, BLOC in the UK, Hungary's Bonusz, Awakenings, Planetlove Ireland and Rockit Open Air in the Netherlands, plus club gigs from Berghain to the 10,000 capacity Fabrik in Madrid to Fabric UK's sister club matter, Ministry of Sound and numerous appearances in Germany, the US, Spain, Holland, Canada, Malta and more. Check out the videos of huge festival crowds on YouTube.
R&S invited Beltram to Europe and techno history was made. Beltram arrived with a new track he'd completed a week before travelling. Energy Flash, released on R&S in Europe and Derrick May's Transmat in the US, is still one of techno's pivotal classics - Muzik Magazine's Track of the Decade, and a track whose title has named any number of record stores and books on dance culture. Energy Flash and its follow up Mentasm with Mundo Muzique made Beltram's name and took the 21-year-old right round the world, playing major events in the UK,
Netherlands, Belgium, Italy and Germany and holding down a residency at the notorious Limelight in New York. Not content to rest, Beltram has continually toured at the major festivals around the globe treating the crowds to the full force of his inspiring sets. He’s also continued releasing seminal tracks, his '93 and '94 tracks Aonox on Visible and "the Beltram re-releases" on Trax, the Caliber EP on the UK's legendary Warp (home of Aphex Twin and Squarepusher), and his '95 LP Places and '96 single Ball Park on Tresor were huge hits - each being one of the biggest techno records of that year, along with the LP following, Close Grind on Novamute, with the pivotal releases Believer and Forklift. Which brings us to 2010, this is the year STX will return, both as a label and a touring show, with Beltram having put the call out to the cream of European and US techno producers to join him. Beltram will continue with the festival headline slots, but an intimate club tour is planned for venues with the right soundsystems...

Finn Johannsen @ podcast #75

Born in Kiel, Germany, in the late 60's, Finn Johannsen started collecting records since he was a kid, with a focus on anything danceable from Disco, Soul, Post Punk, to Synth Pop and all points in between, and entered the nightlife as soon as he could. He spent his formative years dancing in some legendary clubs in Hamburg and started out as a DJ in the 80's on the Rare Soul circuit, and later fell in love with House and Techno and the styles that followed suit. Over the years he played numerous national and international gigs, and his widely acclaimed mixes and radio shows are all over the web. He also gained high profile with his writings for De:bug magazine and Resident Advisor and a whole lot of other print and web media publications (and there are rumors that he is affiliated with the mysterious D*ruffalo blog). After moving to Berlin all his activities multiplied, leading most notably to the founding of the Macro Recordings imprint with Stefan Goldmann, and working at the legendary Hard Wax store.
