Dopplereffekt @ Roxy Theater, Los Angeles [20.05.09]

Gerald Donald and Michaela To-Nhan Bertel

There is a division between the rich and the poor. And these technologies are usually controlled by the people that have the ressources to fund them. The technologies which become obsolete are no longer useful for this powerful group, and eventually trickle down to what we see today. A lot of outdated military technology is now in use with the common people, the general public. Take a radar, for example, which was invented in the Second World War. Now you can use the same technology in your vehicule to ward off police.
You can find new uses for any kind of technology.
People are still using nets to catch fish, people are still using knives in the kitchen. And those technologies have been around for thousands of years. They don’t become obsolete, they become refined over time.

Arpino liveset in Berlin @ Crobedduhaus [09.08.05]

Arpino's career took off towards the end of the Eighties, when he linked himself to the emergent techno and house scene from Detroit and Europe, in particular Germany. Between 1990 and 1995, he was greatly influenced by other genres, including hip-hop, jazz, jungle, techno and house music. He also became an active member of renowned European club FEZ, where he played as resident deejay. In addition, he has collaborated with italian musicians and bands like Zona 45, with whom he produced the track "Fine Millennio" (1994, right tempo), QuintettoX and FezCombo, acting as scratcher and electronic composer. In 1997 he co-founded the "Edmondo" project (Minus Habens Recordings) with electronic composer Diego Ragnini and eminent Italian trombone player Gianluca Petrella. In the same period he co-operated with rock bands, the most memorable of which was the self-produced project "Crystal Psyche Band", a fusion of electronic music and psychedelic sounds. In 1998, he founded the project "Kolinahr" togheter with Fabrizio Ippolito aka dj Doraemon. the result of which was the self-produced album "Meno3". Arpino continues to self-produce his work, the latest of which is hisBoicot EP mix. He found togheter with dj lillo,dj doraemon and dj andrea fiorito the project "4 dialogue". He also is an active member of "LAB 080" collective and continues to play live as deejay with big names, including Luciano,FC Kahuna, M.I.A., Derrick May,Barem and many others. In his live sets, he uses a laptop and Midi peripherals. The concept of live for him is a half way between a DJ and a musician: originial material, with other people's tracks mixed and reworked live. The live set is based on the interaction between tracks, sounds and samples played on the fly, according to the unique and variable needs of the people dancing at that moment. The live set are based on "dry" grooves, minimal and old style house.

James Stinson 7th anniversary

taken from drexciya research lab blog

This year it is the 7th anniversary of James Stinson's death and while I like to think we remember him everyday I guess I should mark it, a day late I know, with a post. I recently found the following touching and penetrating tribute to him written by Christine Hsieh for Remix webmag which I hadn't seen before and am happy to archive it here for this purpose. I know there has been at least one radio show tribute to him this week but if anyone knows of anything else happening let me know. The best place to reconnect with James outside of his music would still have to be the radio interview with him which can as always be heard here.

Children of the Resistance

Throughout human history, two forces have been documented. The Rich and the Poor, the highs and the lows (and the lows that are lead to believe they are in the middle). However, amidst the manipulation cast down from oppressor to oppressed exists a third, undocumented force. They tell you that we have had our glory day; they tell you that our job is done. They only acknowledge the fallen; they like to make examples of the fallen. We all remember the kid at Tiananmen Square and Dr. King. There are more of us. Our battle does not end. The truth we seek is infinite. Read more at

Drexciya - Rare Interview with Liz Copeland [May 2002]

Born in 1969, James Stinson grew up on Detroit's east side and graduated from Kettering in 1989. His name may not share the familiarity of his Detroit techno peers, yet James Marcel Stinson anonymously produced some of the city's most celebrated recordings during the '90s as the primary member of Drexciya. For nearly a decade, he quietly produced numerous recordings as a loose affiliate of the Underground Resistance collective and also as part of the Tresor roster before succumbing to a heart complication in late 2002 and passing away on September 3. Stinson never sought personal fame or glory despite the international recognition of his music, instead emphasizing the music itself and shrouding his identity in fantastic and subtle ideology that further accentuated the wondrous nature of his work and earned him incredible respect among those who knew him personally.
Now there's a whole resurgence of electro, and James was the life force of it. He had a fascination with the ocean, and aquatic things, and African-American history, and the voyage African people had to make. He was fascinated with the strength and endurance you have to have to make a voyage. His best feature was that good enough wasn't enough. He always pushed the envelope. Even at UR, where pushing the envelope is the norm, he pushed it harder than any artist on the label. He would expect us to keep living on the edge.

James Marcel Stinson, musician, born September 14 1969; died September 3 2002. 'Negative evolution cycle completed. Now in sonic infinitum mode.' - UR
